(1873–1939) Archaeologist who in 1922 found the intact tomb of the 14th-century BC Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamen, piled high with its treasures, in the Valley of the Kings at Thebes; the contents are now in the Cairo Museum. From 1907 Carter's excavations had been paid for by the 5th earl of Carnarvon (1866–1923), who was bitten by a mosquito when in the Valley of the Kings in 1923; the bite turned septic and a month later he contracted pneumonia and died in Cairo, giving rise to much speculation about the revenge of the disturbed pharaoh's spirit.
