|
|
The Scottish spelling of *borough, retaining until 1975 a difference in meaning. It was used of towns which had a degree of self-government, usually conferred by royal charter – hence a 'royal burgh'. Since the reorganization of Scottish *local government in 1975, the word has been mainly of historical significance.
