bungalow

Word used by the British in India in the 18–19C for their own one-storey homes, and applied in the early 20C to single-storey houses of a similar kind being built in Britain, mainly in the suburbs and in seaside resorts. The origin is uncertain but the word probably derives from bangla (Bengali), reflecting a British belief that such houses were characteristic of Bengal.
