George Crabbe

|
(1754–1832) Poet and clergyman born at Aldeburgh, in Suffolk. His long poems about country life, such as The Village (1783), use traditional rhyming couplets and yet give a harshly realistic picture. The Borough (1810) brings together several stories set in Aldeburgh and was the inspiration for Britten's *Peter Grimes.
