(16,000 in 1991) Port and yachting centre on both banks of the Medina estuary at the northern tip of the Isle of Wight. The yachting activities in the Solent culminate in the fashionable Cowes week in early August. Of the many clubs in the region the earliest and most exclusive is the Royal Yacht Squadron, established in 1815. Its members have the unique privilege of being allowed to fly the white *ensign. Since 1856 the Squadron has had its headquarters in Cowes castle – one of Henry VII's coastal defences, dating from 1540 but rebuilt.
