(1903–89, kt 1974) Composer known for his elegant craftsmanship. One of his earliest works (after studying with Nadia Boulanger in Paris) was an orchestral suite of Catalan dances, Mont Juic (1937), written in collaboration with Benjamin Britten. He was a convert to Roman Catholicism and many of his pieces for voice or choir were religious in content.
