Bayeux Tapestry
|
|
Not in fact a tapestry but an embroidered strip of linen (68m/74yd long and on average about 50cm/20in high). It depicts in lively detail the events culminating in the Norman *Conquest in 1066. It is believed to have been made in southern England before 1082. Displayed for centuries in the nave of Bayeux Cathedral in Normandy, it is now on show nearby in a custom-built museum of its own.
