Comedy thriller series with a successful blend of chic, kinkiness, violence and a sense of not taking itself too seriously. Patrick MacNee played the male lead – the elegant secret agent Steed, with bowler hat and cane. His female colleague in 1961–3 was Honor Blackman (judo expert and devotee of black leather), followed by Diana Rigg (1965–7) and Linda Thorson (1968). In 1976 MacNee returned in The New Avengers with Joanna Lumley.
