Austin

Car company founded in 1905 by Herbert Austin (1866–1941) at Longbridge, south of Birmingham; he had previously designed cars for *Wolseley. In 1922 Austin produced the first British car for the popular market, the famous Austin Seven or 'Baby Austin'; it remained in production until 1939. In 1952 the company merged with Austin's great rival, *Morris, to become the *British Motor Corporation. In 1959 the *Mini was offered as a revival of the Austin Seven.
