Ascension
|
|
Island of volcanic origin in the south Atlantic, administered from *St Helena (some 1125km/700m to the southeast). It was uninhabited until 1815, when *Napoleon was sent to St Helena and Britain posted troops on Ascension. It later became an important link in communications systems (submarine cable and radio), and in the 1980s acquired a new prominence as a staging post to the *Falklands.
