curate's egg
|
|
A phrase for anything that is a mixture of good and bad. It derives from a cartoon by *du Maurier in Punch on 9 November 1895, in which the bishop says to a nervous curate at breakfast 'I'm afraid you've got a bad egg, Mr Jones' and gets the reply 'Oh no, my Lord, I assure you! Parts of it are excellent!'
