(1787–1865, bt 1859) Founder of the greatest of the shipping lines of the steam age. Born in Canada, he came to Britain in 1838 and set up the British and North American Mail Steam Packet Company. He introduced the first regular transatlantic postal service when the Britannia left Liverpool on 4 July 1840, arriving in Boston 14 days later (one day better than the previous record set by *Brunel's Great Western). Renamed the Cunard Line, the company built and operated many of the most famous British liners – including the *Mauretania, the *Lusitania and the three Queens (*Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth, *QE2).
