Culzean Castle

(23km/14m SW of Ayr) One of the masterpieces of Robert *Adam and a precursor of the many 19C stately homes disguised as castles. It was built in 1777–87 for the Kennedy family, on the site of an earlier tower house at the top of a craggy cliff facing the Atlantic. The round drawing room in the great castellated tower and the oval staircase in the centre of the house are two of Adam's most impressive creations. His home farm of 1777 is now the visitors' centre for a large country park. An apartment in the house, given in 1946 to General Eisenhower in recognition of his achievements in World War II, is kept as a memorial to him.
