Culloden
|
|
(16 Apr. 1746) Battle between some 5000 Scots under Charles Edward *Stuart and a government army of about 9000 under the duke of *Cumberland. Taking place on an exposed moor 5km/3m east of Inverness (kept now as a memorial), it put a decisive end to the *'45 Rebellion and was the last battle fought on British soil. In addition to being outnumbered, the Scots were exhausted after marching throughout the previous night in a futile attempt to surprise the enemy. The battle lasted less than an hour and ended in the complete rout of the Pretender's army.
