(1788–1855) Carpenter turned speculative builder who made a fortune constructing large parts of 19C London, most notably *Belgravia. He was unusual in hiring his craftsmen on a permanent basis. The need to keep them employed caused him to buy up tracts of land for development in the rapidly expanding city. The designs were usually by himself or by members of his firm, which for a while included his brother Lewis (1799–1883).
