(Crufts Dog Show) Annual event dating back to a show organized at the Royal Agricultural Hall in Islington in 1891 by Charles Cruft (1852–1938), an ex-salesman of Spratt's 'dog cakes'. By the time of his death Crufts was a fixture in the national calendar. It was then taken on by the *Kennel Club. From 1948 it was held at Olympia; in 1979 it moved to Earl's Court; and in 1991 it went for the first time out of London, to the National Exhibition Centre at Birmingham. Each year's show, now lasting four days and attended by much publicity, results in a winner for each breed and one supreme champion.
