Something of a national obsession in Britain, as in the United States. The first simple crossword puzzles appeared in England in the 19C, mainly in children's magazines, but the complex modern crossword was developed in the USA from 1913. The Sunday Express launched in 1924 the first regular crossword in Britain, and it was not until 1 February 1930 that the country's best-known crossword began its career in the Times.
