Birmingham Royal Ballet
|
|
Company which acquired this name when it moved in 1990 to the Hippodrome in Birmingham, under the artistic direction of Peter *Wright. It descends from the Sadler's Wells Theatre Ballet, founded in 1946 at *Sadler's Wells in London after the *Royal Ballet had moved to Covent Garden. Administered as a second company of the Royal Ballet, it was intended specifically for young dancers and had from the start a commitment to regular touring. A royal charter in 1956 transformed it into the Sadler's Well Royal Ballet, the name under which it was known until the move to Birmingham. It still spends most of its season on tour (including visits to Sadler's Wells) and retains links with the Royal Ballet; both companies recruit their dancers from the Royal Ballet School in Richmond Park.
