, known as the Gunners (Highbury, London N5). Football club formed in 1884 among workers in the Royal Arsenal at *Woolwich (the name Arsenal was adopted in 1886). The club turned professional in 1891 and was elected that same year to Division 2 of the *Football League. Since 1904 they have played continuously in Division 1 apart from two years (1913–14), which were also the first two years after the move to Highbury in north London. Inspired by Herbert *Chapman, they were so successful in the 1930s that the local tube station, Gillespie Road, was renamed Arsenal in their honour.
