The Comedy of Errors
|
|
(c.1593) The earliest comedy by *Shakespeare, based on the Roman farces of *Plautus. The comic errors are those of mistaken identity. Maximum opportunities for confusion are provided by a pair of identical twins, each called Antipholus, who employ another pair of identical twins, each called Dromio. To give the plot the necessary element of danger, Syracuse and Ephesus are in a state of hostility and one identical master-and-servant pair comes from each place.
