(1804–65) The chief 19C advocate, with John *Bright, of the principle of *free trade. Having established his own textile business, he was drawn into politics in opposition to the *Corn Laws, leading the argument in the House of Commons after being elected MP for Stockport in 1841. He remained an MP, for various constituencies, until his death, continuing to campaign for a broader international abolition of tariffs.
