clog dance
|
|
Traditional dance in which the wooden soles of the clogs are used to beat out complex rhythms. It was particularly popular in Ireland and northern England. Danced competitively on table tops or as an entertainment in theatres (the infant Charlie *Chaplin first appeared before the public with a clog dance), it later had considerable influence on the more sophisticated tap dancing of the USA.
