Cliveden
|
|
(13km/8m NW of Windsor) House built in the 1850s by Charles *Barry in the style of an Italian Renaissance palace, with formal gardens and spectacular views down to the Thames. It has twice had a high profile in British political life, first when Nancy *Astor played hostess here in the 1930s to the 'Cliveden set' (supporters of *appeasement) and then, in the 1960s, as the location of the party scenes in the *Profumo affair.
