Clickhimin Broch
|
|
(2km/1m S of Lerwick) One of the best preserved brochs (stone towers of the *Bronze and *Iron Ages) in Scotland. It stands on an island at the end of a causeway in Loch Clickhimin, with space around it for a small settlement. Built in about the 5th century BC, and in use for perhaps 1000 years, its walls (5.5m/18ft thick) still stand 4.5m/15ft high from an original height of probably three times as much.
