A word of long and varied history. Deriving from Norman French for any 'clear' wine, it was for some centuries used of intermediate wines between the unmistakable extremes of white and red. From about 1600 it inclined to the red side. Only in the past century or so has it had its exclusive modern meaning, restricted to red wine from the vineyards of Bordeaux.
