clan
|
|
Important social group in Scotland, particularly in the Highlands. The members of a clan come originally from the same region and share the same surname but are not directly related. The system may have developed when the *Scots were establishing control in the 9C. It was the clans who supported the Young Pretender in 1745, and the power of their chieftains was deliberately broken after *Culloden. The existence of a clan *tartan plays an important part in the modern sense of group identity.
