Civil Service

Collective name for the civilian officials working in the departments of central government. The term originated in the 18C in the *East India Company, to describe those British employees of the company engaged in administration in India (as opposed to those in the military service). In 1968 the post of minister for the civil service was created; it is held by the prime minister.
