City
|
|
(City of London, 4000 in 1991) The area of the original walled city of *London, not much more than 2.5sq.km/1sq.m in size and known colloquially as 'the square mile'. It is administered from the *Guildhall by the Corporation of London, headed by the *Lord Mayor (whose residence is the *Mansion House). As the centre of the nation's business and financial activities, the City has for a century or more consisted of little other than office buildings – which explains why the resident population is so small.
