Christmas cards

The first Christmas card was designed by John Callcott Horsley in 1843 for Henry Cole (an important figure in the early days of the *Victoria and Albert Museum). A thousand copies were printed. It depicted a happy family gathering which caused some offence to the temperance lobby, for the young children were shown with wine glasses.
