Christie's

(Christie, Manson and Woods, London SW1)
Auctioneers established in London by James Christie in 1776. Starting with general furniture and household effects, he soon began to specialize in fine art, a field in which the firm held an undisputed lead until challenged by *Sotheby's in the mid-20C. His son James moved to the present address in 1823. William Manson became a partner in 1831, and Thomas Woods in 1859.
