Fletcher Christian
|
|
(dates unknown) Acting lieutenant or second-in-command on HMS Bounty, and leader of the mutiny in 1789 against Captain *Bligh. He subsequently sailed the ship to Tahiti, and later moved on again with some of the mutineers, accompanied by Tahitian men and women. No more was heard of them until one survivor and the English-speaking descendants of the group were discovered on *Pitcairn Island in 1808. The survivor said that Christian had died on Pitcairn, but there were persistent rumours in the early 19C that he returned to Britain. He has been portrayed on film by Clark Gable in 1935 and by Marlon Brando in 1962.
