(London W4) Villa built 1725–9 by Lord *Burlington in the grounds of his Jacobean mansion (no longer surviving) in the countryside just west of London. A notable example of his commitment to *Palladianism, it is based mainly on Palladio's Villa Capra, near Vicenza. Of great formal elegance but surprisingly small, its purpose was to house his paintings and books and to provide a meeting place for his friends. In the interior decoration and in the design of the garden Burlington was assisted by William *Kent.
