chief
|
|
and chieftain Head of a Scottish *clan, a position hereditary within a family. The words are often used indiscriminately, but sometimes 'chief' is kept for the head of an entire clan and 'chieftain' for the leader of a subsidiary group. The chief is referred to by a repetition of the clan name; thus the chief of the Macleod clan is the Macleod of Macleod.
