Chequers

|
(in full Chequers Court) Official country residence of the prime minister. An old house in the Chilterns, to the west of London, it was largely rebuilt in the 16C and was given neo-Gothic trimmings in the 19C. It was bought in 1909 by Arthur Hamilton Lee (1868–1947, Conservative MP for Fareham 1900–18, viscount Lee of Fareham 1922). He restored it, furnished it, and in 1917 gave it to the nation with a large endowment for its present purpose. The first prime minister to use it was *Lloyd George in 1921.
