Chelmsford

|
(197,000 in 1991) Market town and administrative centre of Essex. From the 13C this was where Essex's law courts were held and where the county's taxes were collected. But it was not until 1914 that Chelmsford became a diocese and the parish church of St Mary (15C, much rebuilt) acquired the status of a cathedral. The neoclassical Shire Hall, completed in 1792, is by John Johnson (1754–1814), who designed several buildings in the town. *Marconi established his business here in the early years of the century and electronics has become the main local industry.
