Cheddleton Flint Mill
|
|
(16km/10m NE of Stoke-on-Trent) The water wheels of two mills face each other across a mill race on the river Churnet. The north mill was built about 1756–65, probably by James *Brindley, to grind flint for the Staffordshire potteries (the addition of powdered flint whitened the wares); it remains much as when in use. The south mill, an older corn mill adapted to grinding flint, houses a museum of the raw materials used in the ceramics industry.
