(72,000 in 1991) Town in Kent, near the mouth of the river Medway, which has been important in British naval history since *Henry VIII established a royal dockyard there. Over the centuries many of the navy's most famous ships were built at Chatham, including HMS *Victory. The dockyard was finally closed in 1984, and is now a museum. The town also has close associations with Charles *Dickens.
