William Chambers
|
|
(1723–96, kt 1770) Architect of Scottish descent who was the chief rival in his day of another Scotsman, Robert *Adam. Chambers' success began in 1755 when he was appointed architectural tutor to the future George III, whose mother then commissioned him in 1757 to provide classical temples and follies (including the famous pagoda) in *Kew Gardens. His real buildings, mostly in the prevailing *Palladian style, tended to be more conventional than Adam's. The most ambitious was *Somerset House in London.
