Wooden corvette which covered 127,600km/79,300m in 1872–6, carrying out an exploration of the oceans undertaken jointly by the Admiralty and the Royal Society. The director was Charles Wyville Thomson (1830–82). The Report on the Scientific Results (50 vols, 1880–95) provided a wealth of material on oceanography and marine biology which is still of use today.
