The *Celts were driven west across Britain some 1400 years ago by the *Anglo-Saxons, and variants of their ancient language survive now only on the west coasts of Wales, Scotland and Ireland. The dialects are divided into two groups: Goidelic, the northern variety, which covers the *Gaelic spoken in Ireland and Scotland and until recently in the Isle of Man; and Brythonic, in the south, which includes *Welsh, Cornish and Breton, the language of Brittany in northwest France.
