|
|
(c.1521–42) Fifth wife of *Henry VIII. The king married her in July 1540, within three weeks of having his marriage to *Anne of Cleves annulled. A year later he discovered that she had had previous affairs, and in February 1542 parliament passed a bill declaring it treason for an unchaste woman to marry the king. Two days later Catherine was beheaded in the Tower.
