Carlton House

The palace in which the future *George IV lived in lavish style when prince regent. Originally an early 18C house, overlooking the northeast corner of St James's Park, it was reconstructed with a new magnificence from 1783 by Henry *Holland. Even so the prince considered it inadequate for a king. On inheriting the crown he commissioned John *Nash to improve *Buckingham Palace and to build the present Carlton House Terrace (1827–32), on the site of Carlton House.
