Carlton Club
|
|
(London SW1) The *club of the *Conservative party, founded in 1832 to rally support after the Tories had fared badly in the long political struggle leading up to the *Reform Act of that year (their triumphant opponents were at the same time establishing the *Reform Club). The Carlton's first home was in *Carlton House Terrace, but from the late 1830s it occupied premises in Pall Mall between the present Reform and RAC clubs. This site was bombed in World War II, causing the move to St James's Street where the club was again damaged, with injuries to eight people, by an *IRA bomb on 25 June 1990. One of the most dramatic political events in the Carlton's history was the formation of the *1922 Committee.
