(Primate of All England) Senior prelate of the *Church of England and accepted by convention as the senior bishop of the international *Anglican Communion, in which role he presides at the *Lambeth Conference. He has a palace in Canterbury but his main residence is Lambeth Palace in London. The first archbishop of Canterbury was St *Augustine. The archbishop signs with his Christian name followed by Cantuar.
