A landmark in Edinburgh, 108m/355ft high, to the east of the New Town. It was used from the early 19C as a hill of monuments. The National Monument, which looks like the ruins of a Greek temple, is all that was built of a full-scale replica of the *Parthenon in Athens (begun in 1822 as a memorial to the Scottish dead in the *Napoleonic Wars). The Nelson Monument was erected in 1806–16, some 30 years before *Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square.
