Caledonian Canal

Waterway which joined the east and west coasts of Scotland by linking the lakes in the *Great Glen. Surveyed by James Watt from 1773, it was built by *Telford from 1803 with a total of 29 locks; it opened in 1822. Originally of great commercial benefit to Scotland, it is now used mainly by pleasure craft.
