Caerlaverock Castle
|
|
(14km/9m S of Dumfries) Unusual triangular castle, with the entrance between twin towers at its apex. It is now an exceptionally beautiful red sandstone ruin in the waters of its moat. Within the 13C castle walls there was built, in about 1634, a stone mansion with large rooms and a Renaissance-style façade. Both it and the castle were abandoned after being largely destroyed by *Covenanters in 1640.
