(20,000 in 1991) Spa town in Derbyshire, in the centre of the Peak District. As at *Bath, its thermal springs brought the Romans here and made it fashionable again in the 18C; indeed its renewed appeal was much increased after John *Carr had built the Palladian Crescent (1779–84) in direct imitation of those in Bath. The town is particularly known for its music festival, held in late July and early August since 1979. It centres on two operas, linked by some theme and chosen for their relative rarity, which are given in the town's Edwardian opera house (1903, by Frank Matcham).
