(1945) Novel by Evelyn *Waugh in which an Oxford undergraduate, Charles Ryder, becomes increasingly involved with a rich Roman Catholic family, the Flytes, whose ancestral seat is Brideshead. It was made by Granada TV into a very successful 13-part series, first shown in 1981, starring Jeremy Irons as Ryder and Anthony Andrews as Sebastian Flyte, with *Castle Howard standing in for Brideshead.
