Lord Burlington
|
|
(Richard Boyle, 1694–1753, 3rd earl of Burlington 1703) Architect and chief promoter of the *Palladian style in 18C England. He was determined to base a native tradition on the isolated example of Inigo *Jones and on the ideas of Palladio. He commissioned Colen *Campbell to rebuild *Burlington House in Piccadilly; but his country villa, *Chiswick House, was his own design. Other ventures included the Assembly Rooms in York, a painstaking copy of an Egyptian Hall by Palladio. But Burlington's greatest influence was through the work of his friend and protégé, William *Kent.
